Walking in Community in Guatemala

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV

As our Guatemala team closes out our second day in-country, this verse captures the spirit of our weekend. God has blessed our group with a wonderful time of fellowship with the students and missionaries that we support here in this beautiful country.

Saturday was our first day and, after a smooth flight, we were greeted by the smiling faces of Micah and of Hector and his family, as well as our Saving Susan Ministry intern! These wonderful people from Manos de Compasion joined our team and have been an amazing part of the group. Hector is our driver; we are thankful for his driving skills and for sharing his family with our team.

The rest of the day was a special time of fellowship with our Next Steps students and Pastor Wesley and Keren, who lead a church in Zacapa that is attended by two of our students. “Family” is a word that comes to mind every time we return to see these young men and women. This team is full of energy and connects so well with everyone. It’s beautiful to see our common bond in Christ shine through and remove all barriers.

Sunday morning our team began its day with breakfast and an encouraging devotion led by Marsha, reminding the students of their value to God and to Saving Susan Ministry. This was followed by a time of prayer where our team gathered around each student and laid hands on and prayed for them. We know Erwin, Narciso, Miriam, Hugo, and Jelbin each have a bright future, and we were blessed with the opportunity to speak hope and encouragement into their lives both in group and one-on-one settings.

After breakfast we went together to La Aurora Zoo, a lovely oasis in the heart of Guatemala City. We felt like a big family as our team continued to bond together and enjoyed the beautiful day with our students and partners.

In the afternoon we visited Prince of Peace Girl’s Home and shared in a special time with the 30 girls of the home, including a devotion led by Marsha, a bead activity, and a lively soccer game. The love of Christ shown through as our team, despite being complete strangers to this home, connected so well with the girls. It was difficult leaving but we hope to be back again some day.

The day ended with a pizza and pool party with the boys of Manos de Compasion, who live in a home near the city. We are all tired but have full hearts as we look forward to seeing our children at Manos de Compasion tomorrow!
